St John’s Home for the Elderly
Competition Proposal
This was a competition entry we submitted in collaboration with formwerkz architects. The scheme was amongst the top 6 shortlisted entries.
We envision the elder home to possess the qualities of villas embedded in nature despite the densification demanded in today’s urban context.
The principal proposition of the project divides the extensive programme into 2 main zones. A series of detached but inter-linked residential blocks nest on an elevated landscaped terrace that separates the public and main communal spaces on the ground.
Six individual volumes are arranged in a loose manner, creating the maximum amount of open space for each block. Through the lush planting between the gaps, each apartment building is set in its own clearing.
The entire public realm on the ground is characterized by its lofty aspect where the key programmatic volumes of the chapel, administration, community and dining halls are arranged around a central landscaped courtyard. The cloister arrangement organises the circulation and relates the vertically segregrated public and private realms.
